This March and April, numerous high temperature records were broken in the the Central and Eastern United States. These warm temperatures extended into the lower troposphere as can easily be seen in maps of lower tropospheric (TLT) temperature Anomalies.
Map of TLT temperature anomalies for March, 2012. The record warmth over the Central and Eastern United States can easily be seen as a large yellow spot, indicating that the average lower tropospheric temperature was more than 4 degrees Celsius (7.2 degrees F) above normal.
Time Series of TLT temperature anomalies over the Continental United States. The March 2012 anomaly was by far the largest seen since the beginning of the satellite dataset in 1979.
