RSS AMSR-3 released

Date Added:
Tuesday, September 8th, 2026

Today, September 8, 2026, we released environmental data products processed at RSS for the new JAXA AMSR-3 sensor, launched in June 2025. This is the first public version (RSS V2.0). Earlier versions focused on product development and are not public. The most relevant improvements in RSS AMSR-3 compared to AMSR-2 are

  • A new correction for sunglint, that significantly reduces by 50% areas flagged for sunglint in SST and wind data. Data are still flagged in areas of very low sun angle, where the sunglint is very intense.
  • Addition of residual RFI filters at 6, 10 and 19 GHz.

Additionally, we like to inform users about a new data release expected shortly: Environmental products from the Weather System Follow-on - Microwave (WSF-M) radiometer (MWI), processed at RSS, as part of the Microwave Climate Data Record.
